Default problems with setting decent monitor refresh rate

Hi,

Im having problems with getting a good monitor refresh rate.
I have an old crt monitor with no data conection
wich has a max horizontal refresh rate of 82,5khz.
but windows is very limited to either 60h,70hz etc.
idealy I would like to run at 1600x1200@66hz

I have winxp and ati radeon 9800, I have tried powerstrip wich does set the refresh rate and resolution to 1600/1200, but it creates problems becuase it leaves the directx drivers thinking its stil at 60hz.

I also tried the force refresh rate in the ati control panel but it doesnt work corectly when I set it to 66. the monitor cant keep in synch, theres no option inbetween 60 and 66.

ive also tried ATIRefreshRateFix but it screweed up also, leaving my monitor in 1600x600 for some reason and when i tried to set it to 1600x1200@66hz it acepted it, rebooted but then tried didnt work becuse it had set it to 70hz not 66hz.

ive tried lots of other tings before such as custom monitor.inf files etc.

is there any decent solution to this problem yet?
its been around so long i cant beleive how frystrating it is that theres no solution wich doesnt have some serious drawback or whatever.

I spent ages trying to get my 3d viewer to keep to vsync only to find that powerstrip is messing it up.
