If you like less-intense SciFi, try Spider Robinson's Callahan stories: "Lady Slings the Booze" etc.

If you're up for a 9-volume adventure in convoluted alien politics, read CJ Cherryh's Foreigner series. Similar but shorter is her Chanur series, starting with "The Pride of Chanur".

A more straight-forward space-opera would be Elizabeth Moon's Ky Vatta series, or her other one that I can't remember... Heris Serrano - that's it!

I just read Spin State, but that was very intense and confusing - good though.

I'm not into Fantasy, so no suggestions there.
